The last three decades have been a time of vital re-evaluation – the former modernistic criteria of evaluation and description of works of art have lost their power. The new criteria have not been formed yet, and the artists as well as audience face difficulties with finding a stable land. Hardly ever do we encounter a very narrow artistic specialization of artists who try to escape explicit classification by penetrating the border lines between varios kinds of artistic expressions. The interdisciplinary mode has become valuable. The artists reach for new-media, they create instalations and relate to the arsenal of stylistic means from various disciplines of art. It seems however that a certain sphere still exsists, and it is common for all. Drawing is a discipline that still represents the most direct and elementary language of art, as some people claim, drawing is its basic alphabet.
In the case of drawing, the distance between an artist and material trace left by him is usually very small. There is no barrier created by tools. In our understanding, drawing is interpreted as an attempt to touch experience in the course of its happening, when the experience and its record become one. Then the drawing could be identical to the gesture, as an elementary and instinctive reaction of man towards the world and its stimuli.
On the other hand however, we expected the competition to gather expressions, formaly tasteful, precisely rendered, works using a set of artistic means of expression, characteristic for drawing. We took to emphasize the autonomy of drawing which constitutes an independent, complete and definite form of artistic expression. Both the above-mentioned attitudes do not use up all possibilities. Intuition and imagination suggest different solutions. Some artists are influenced by strong emotions, others by quiet reflection – the drawing is a tool of penetration and a record of various experience.
The organizers of the competition ask the artists a fundamental question, a question about trusting rudimentary artistic activities and about drawing’s place in their own artistic practice. At this point the variety of mature, autonomic works of art cocstitute their greatest value and it is the best proof of drawing vitality. This is a gesture which from the chaos of experience and signs, obtains what is important. A gesture from which the arrangement of the world begins.
